Later, Madonna went to Rochester Adams High School, becoming a straight-A student and a member of the cheerleading squad. After graduating, she received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan. She convinced her father to allow her to take ballet lessons, and was persuaded by her ballet teacher to pursue a career in dance. Subsequently, she dropped out of college at the end of 1977, and relocated to New York City. Madonna had little money at the time and lived in squalor, working as a waitress at Dunkin' Donuts and with modern dance troupes.
